Hello, I am the real Galician mussel. A bivalve mollusc also called Mytilus edulis.
I live in numerous shallow communities in the tidal zone, in heavily beaten areas with a lot of organic matter in suspension.
I feed on phytoplankton and zooplankton, and even decomposing organic particles, which are found in seawater, by filtering through my gills. The filtration capacity we have is enormous, pumping up to 8 litres per hour.
My shell is elongated and triangular in shape, with similar shells and smooth edges. I am black, sometimes with brown shades.
The colour of my flesh is more orange than that of other species.
For a long time I was considered the poor relative of molluscs, but my taste and my high nutritional value, a high index of minerals such as iodine or iron – even higher than many meats – and vitamins of the B group, a relatively low caloric value and the infinite recipes I can be part of, make me a fundamental piece of Spanish gastronomy, since my value in the market is also very affordable.
