History and presentation

My name is Coco, I am the Coco King.

I am the King of the Galician Rías Baixas, the spider crab. Although my real name is Maja Squinado.

My family has reigned in these estuaries for generation after generation, feeding on starfish, seaweed, molluscs, sea urchins and the delicacies of kings like us.

We like to live at depths of up to 100 metres. We are solitary, that is why today there is no spider crab to accompany me.

Although our bodies are not as big as our spider crabs, we are thicker and more rounded.

It is said that the females of our species are more highly valued as they have more meat inside them, but the intensity and flavour of the male spider crab’s meat makes it a real royal treat. Without underestimating our wonderful spider crabs, of course.

I am an excellent source of protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are very beneficial in reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. Rich in minerals, I have been attributed with aphrodisiac properties.

As for vitamins, I am known for my contribution of niacin, vitamin B6 and vitamin E.

As now everyone knows who I am, it is an honour for me to introduce myself this year, as leader of the Rías Bajas team to win the Festival of Sea Flavors.

Our Lobster the Surfer GluGlú has been studying for months the rest of the seafood that will compete in the Festival of Flavors of the Sea, he has just arrived, accompanied by the Prawns Inspectors of the Royal Guard, since the seafood of Japan wanted to play dirty in the tournament.

And moreover, as unity is strength, we will show that the seafood and the flavours of our Galician estuary are unrivalled.

Buy Spider Crab

The spider crab from the estuary, together with its female counterpart, the spider crab, is one of those typical Christmas dishes that all Spaniards know and enjoy. For a long time, for commercial reasons, it was only available in the winter months.

Nowadays you can buy spider crab online and receive it at home any time of the year. In Spain, it is true, fishing for this animal is banned in the summer months, although specimens can be obtained from the coasts of France and England, or frozen in season.

However, the spider crab in the Galician estuary is different from all the others. For some reason this animal is called the king of seafood, and Arousa’s is called the king of kings. It is that its quality is superior in every way.

The specimens usually reach a radius of 20 centimetres and can weigh between one and four kilograms. Interestingly, the smallest spider crabs have the most meat in proportion, and are also the most tender.

Unlike other seafood that can be eaten in many ways – grilled, sautéed, and even raw – the spider crab has a fairly classic way of preparation: cooked in salt water.

There are some minor differences in preparation depending on whether the animal is alive or dead at the time of starting. For all the rest, the procedure of cooking, separating the parts and serving is standard in almost all areas of Spain.

In any case, the spider crab is a seafood that may seem small but is very usable. In addition to the piece of meat, which is the central hull that serves as a bowl to savour the broth from the preparation, the body, separated into four pieces, and the fleshy front claws are eaten.

What kind of Spider Crab to buy?

The spider crabs of Galicia all belong to the same species, with some minor variations that only matter to biologists for classification purposes. In other parts of the world we can find other varieties, such as the Japanese spider crab which reach incredible sizes.

In our online shop you can buy both the male and the female and we will send it to your home. The difference between the genera is remarkable and it manages to divide diners into well-differentiated flocks.

Male spider crabs are usually fleshier and therefore more usable. On the other hand, females usually come with eggs inside, the so-called coral, which is exquisite for many.
